Hands-On with the Invicta 17311 Speedway

It's hands-on time. Today, we are going to be covering the Invicta 17311 from their Speedway collection. This watch arrived with the Citizen CC3000-89L, and I described in that hands-on review that delivery and packaging were all above par. The individual box for the Invicta is nice but nothing special. This is not a deal breaker for me as I buy watches for the watch and not the box. If a great box comes as well, it's like a bonus.

The Invicta 17311 is probably the smallest chronograph that Invicta makes coming in at a mere 40mm. I believe the Pro Diver from Invicta also has a 40mm watch but that one is a three-hander. In any case, it's not the robust powerhouses that we've all come to know and love from Invicta . The case design is classic round and polished on the bezel and case middle. The lugs are brushed offering a good contrast. On the left side's case middle there is the brand name “Invicta” engraved.

This watch features a textured, screw locked main crown, and screw locked chronograph pushers. The screw locked pushers is something I don't see very often in mainstream watchmaking. Breitling does it but I am hard pressed to think of another watch manufacturer that screw locks pushpieces. Screw locking pushpieces is designed to help with the overall water resistance of the timepiece. I just want to say I was pleasantly surprised. Some may consider this a small detail but when you've been around as many watches as I have – it's the small things that start to matter. The case back is also screwed in, which maximizes water resistance. Speaking of water resistance, the Invicta 17311 carries a rating of 200 meters .
When I tried on the watch, there was some weight to it but not a lot. The bracelet hugged my wrist and was very comfortable. I liked the three link setup with the outermost links brushed, and the central links all polished. The single folding clasp is quite secure and allows for minute adjustments to the length of the bracelet . Though this is a pretty standard clasp, I want to impress upon you just how well it's made.

The Invicta 17311 carries a matte silver dial. The blue rimmed subdials feature positions at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock. The counter at 3 displays the current time in 24 hour format, while the subdials at 6 and 9 reveal the chronograph seconds and minutes respectively. The continuous seconds hand occupies a central position, which is a bit different than most chronographs I've seen. All of the hands on this watch are made from blued steel. The central hours and minutes hands, as well as the applied baton shaped hour markers carry lume, which makes this watch very legible at night. The crystal is Flame Fusion , which is sapphire crystal coated over mineral crystal. The crystal is exceptionally clear, and there seems to be very little glare associated with it.

At 12 the Invicta logo and the Invicta name are also applied in blued steel. I think the aesthetics on the dial are simply superb and Invicta gets full marks in this regard. What detracts from the watch for me is the tachometric scale engraved on the bezel. Without a central chronograph seconds hand, this is pretty much a useless addition and just there basically for looks. Completing the dial is a date aperture at 4:30. Inside the Invicta 17311 is a Japanese made quartz movement.

All in all, I love the look and feel of the watch, but I also do believe that given the specs of this watch – it could've very easily have been made to be a diver's watch instead of a driver's watch. To me, it borrows aspects from both design themes and ends up being neither of the two.
